Summer is such a great time for socialising, swimming and being outdoors. Exercising? Not so much. Hot weather can increase pesky workout discomfort ten-fold.

Think excess sweating, chaffing and beetroot face – not to mention how sticky you’ll feel!

However, if you’re anything like us, simply giving up exercise over summer is not an option. Here are 5 tricks for relieving discomfort during hot weather sessions.

1. Get the right workout gear

Anything overly synthetic (think sparkly tights) will trap heat and cause you to sweat excessively. Either opt for natural fibres or moisture-wick performance fabrics, which absorb moisture without trapping heat.

2. Use talcum powder

Another nifty trick is to lightly coat problem areas – inner thighs, arm pits, back of the neck – with talcum powder. It helps absorb perspiration and keeps skin relatively dry.

Remember, not all talcs are created equal. Opt for natural, chemical-free talcs if you can.

3. Carry a water spray

Simply fill a small spray bottle with water and refrigerate the night before a workout. Carry it with you during a workout, and periodically spray your pressure points to cool your blood flow down.

Focus on your wrists, inside the elbow, under the ears, backs of the knees and temples. A spray over the face helps, too!

4. Use vaseline

Chaffing around your chest, arm pits and thighs can be incredibly painful. If you’ve already done damage, rub vaseline or paw paw ointment over the affected areas before a workout. This will help alleviate the burn and provide much-needed moisture.

5. Drink icy cold water afterwards

Forget room-temperature! If you can, grab a bottle of cold water. Research suggests ingesting cold water sends signals to your brain to decrease sweat production immediately.

Drinking cold water during your workout will also help.
